Is Pet Software Too Much for a Solo Operator?

In short

If you look after one or two pets a month for clients you know well, a notebook and WhatsApp are enough. Keep them. Software starts to pay back when you have more than one pet at a time, a pet on medicine, new clients each month, or a bill you forgot to collect. Setup is three short steps: your business details, one real booking, and a link you send to clients. Skip everything else until you need it. petboard's Solo plan is Rs 199 a month for up to 5 active pets, your first booking is free, and you need no card to start.

When is a notebook and WhatsApp enough?

Many solo operators run well on a notebook and WhatsApp. It is enough if most of these are true for you:

  • You look after one or two pets at a time.
  • Most of your clients come back, and you already know their pets.
  • No pet in your care needs medicine on a schedule.
  • Clients pay you on time, and you remember who has paid.
  • Nobody else needs to see your bookings.

If this is you, software adds work and gives little back. Spend the time with the pets instead.

When does software start to pay back?

Software starts to help when the notebook stops being the one place where everything is. Watch for these signs:

  • Two or more pets at the same time. You now need to know who is here, who arrives, and who leaves on which day.
  • A pet on medicine. You need to know which medicine is due and whether it was given.
  • New clients every month. You ask the same questions again and again on WhatsApp: food, allergies, vet, vaccine dates.
  • A bill you forgot. You realise a week later that a client did not pay for two nights.
  • A helper. A friend or family member looks after the pets when you are away, and they cannot read your notebook.

A worked example

The numbers below are made up, to show how to do the sum for your own business.

Kavya boards dogs in her home. She charges Rs 700 a night. In one month, she looks after 5 different dogs, for 18 nights in total. That is Rs 12,600 of bookings in the month.

ItemNotebook and WhatsAppWith petboard Solo
Cost of the toolRs 0Rs 199 a month
One 3-night stay not billedRs 2,100 lostEach booking has a bill
Asking 3 new clients for detailsAbout 20 minutes each, on chatClients fill in your form

One forgotten 3-night bill (Rs 2,100) costs more than 10 months of the Solo plan (Rs 199 × 10 = Rs 1,990). If Kavya never forgets a bill and has no new clients, the notebook is still the cheaper choice. Do the same sum with your own rate and your own month.

How long does setup take?

We do not give a number of minutes, because it depends on you. Here are the steps, so you can judge for yourself.

  1. Your business. Type your business name (or your own name) and your WhatsApp number. Tap your main service and the pets you accept. The other fields can stay empty. Tap "Agree and continue".
  2. Your first booking. Add one real client, their pet and the dates. Then tap "Send confirmation on WhatsApp". WhatsApp opens with the message ready, and you press send. If you have no booking yet, tap "No booking to add right now".
  3. Let clients book you. petboard shows your enquiry link. Send it to a client, or copy it.

After that, your Dashboard shows a "Getting Started" list with a few more steps, such as setting your rates and sending your first photo update. None of them are required.

What does the Solo plan count?

The Solo plan counts active pets, not bookings or clients. An active pet is a pet with at least one booking that falls in the month, for any service, unless the booking is cancelled. Each pet counts once a month, however many bookings it has. A dog that boards and also has a groom in the same month is one active pet. A booking later in the same month also counts.

So with Solo, you can look after up to 5 different pets in a month, and book each of them as often as you like. If a 6th new pet would make the month go over the limit, petboard does not save that booking. It shows a message asking you to upgrade to Growth: Rs 499 a month for up to 20 active pets.

What is different in India?

Messages go from your own WhatsApp number. petboard does not send messages for you. When you tap a WhatsApp button, WhatsApp opens on your phone with the message ready, and you press send. Your clients see your number, the one they already know.

Payment goes to your own UPI ID. Add your UPI ID in Settings. When money is due, the bill message you send has a link that opens the client's UPI app with the amount filled in. The money goes to you, not to petboard.

Your client list is personal data. India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 applies to personal data collected "in digital form", and to data collected "in non-digital form and digitised subsequently" (section 3(a)). Section 8(5) asks a business to protect that data "by taking reasonable security safeguards to prevent personal data breach" (the Act as published in the Gazette, checked 18 October 2026). Parliament passed this Act in 2023. Most of its duties, including these, start in May 2027. Following them now is good practice. A client list on your phone, in WhatsApp chats and in a spreadsheet is digital data in three places. Keeping it in one place is easier to protect. This is a summary, not legal advice.

Start on the Solo plan
